Hashimoto's Friendly is a cookbook I developed to assist those living with Hashimoto's disease to help
navigate their condition by providing recipes that not only comply with the dietary restrictions that
define the condition, but nutritious, and delicious.
One of the many people affected by Hashimoto’s is my great aunt Teressa who has been a cook professionally and domestically for about her whole life. When
I was younger I’d spend many days coming to hers over the holidays or after school. As I’ve gotten older I have learned more about her and her experience with
Hashimoto’s, particularly how her livelihood turned around once she learned more about the dietary nuances of Hashimoto’s.
When discussing with my auntie the actual food she makes and the recipes she sees for Hashimoto’s, most recipes are done as adjustments to pre-existing
meals. These often take the form of poor substitutions in popular Italian or other dishes popular in the western culinary tradition. In an effort to move away from this,
she has taken more and more inspiration from vegan and vegetarian cuisine, but still finds she has to substitute many ingredients. Part of my goal with this website
and cookbook is to design recipes with Hashimoto’s in mind from the beginning, instead of changing things at the end.
